"Darling, please give me that camera !" - 5D with the battery grip and the 24-70 Zoom

Model shooting

Hello !

This is certainly no review of the new Canon 5D. I worked with that Camera for ten minutes, so it would be funny to say I have tested that camera. But for that people eager to get this camera: It looks good, it is not too small, at least for my hands, lightweight which is a plus in comparison to the 1D series, layout similar to 20D, so no problem there, viewfinder is better but as I come from a medium format background it will always stay too small for me. For those wearing spectacles it is okay but as I heard it is not an high eyepoint viewer (I liked the Nikon 801 or F100 series for that purpose).

The TFT is bright and clear and big, very nice and useable. From a 1600 Iso jpg I got the impression that it has a one stop better Iso Performance, than my Mark II. As this camera will appeal to wedding photographers I miss the second card slot which gives me on my Mark II a higher security level. Certainly only the best optics will make sense with this camera. Only the L optics will do and even not all of them will deliver perfect sharp result to the edges, as I have already some issues with the 17-40 L on my 1DMarkII. The new 24-105 is an optic I have waited for, a little lighter than my 24-70, the perfect zoom range I need for my work, as 70 mm was always a little to short for my press, studio and aerial shots. But I have to test it against the 24-70 before I buy it.

I shot jpg+raw, no delays there but I can only view the jpg as there is no raw converter online. It is Cr2 extension but Dpp needs an update which will come soon I think. There is a new feature in all Canon Dslr cameras and in DPP which should make it easier to get a certain look with all cameras down to the D30. The idea is to apply a certain setting to a raw file and get the same output in terms of color and contrast, sounds intersting if it works. The Camera at least here in Europe will hit the streets in the next2-3 weeks and I got the impression that it will be delivered in much higher numbers from the beginning compared to my MarkII.

Presentation of New Canon Equipment in the Galeria "Westlicht" on the 13.09.2005 in Vienna, which included model shooting, a good presentation, a delicious bufet and as hard contrast the pictures of the World Press Photo Award

A Model is watching during a rest the shooting going on with another model on the beautiful red vespa - certainly all the photographers mine included were only interested in the motorbike, at least thats what I told my wife !
